LEFT: In 1956 Buddy Knox graduated from West Texas State College with a degree in business administration. While at WTSC he belonged to a singing group called The Serenaders. LEFT CENTER: The Serenaders evolved into the Rhythm Orchids, now including Jimmy Bowen, and became a popular local band. RIGHT CENTER: Wanting to cut a record to sell at gigs, the Orchids went to Norman Petty's studio in Clovis, New Mexico and recorded two original songs, Party Doll and I'm Stickin' With You — both million-sellers in 1957 with Party Doll reaching #1 on the charts. RIGHT: Buddy, a pioneer of the "Tex-Mex" sound, continued to record and tour until his death from cancer on February 14, 1999 at the age of sixty-five.

Buddy Knox was the first artist
of the rock era to write and perform his own
number one hit song ("Party Doll")
