to have five stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
— for his contributions to Radio, Recording,
Motion Pictures, Television and
Live Theatre."

Gene Autry

Orvon Grover (Gene) Autry was born on September 29, 1907 near Tioga, Texas. In the 1920s his family moved to Oklahoma where Autry worked on the family ranch while attending school.
He left school in 1925 and worked in a telegraph office where he passed time singing and playing the guitar.
He learned how to yodel, as he was inspired by, and emulated, Jimmie Rodgers.
Seeking a recording contract, he travelled to New York in 1928 to audition for Victor Records. They liked his voice, but suggested he gain more experience.
Later that year he was singing on Tulsa radion station KVOO as "Oklahoma's Yodeling Cowboy." He sometimes sang duets with Jimmie Long.
In 1929 he worked in Chicago on the WLS-AM radio show, National Barn Dance. He also had his own show, where he performed with singer-songwriter Smiley Burnette.
In 1929 he also signed with Columbia Records.
His singing style in the early 1930s was decidedly hillbilly and some of his songs espoused Depression-era themes such as bootlegging, corrupt police and shady women.
In 1932 Autry had a hit recording with That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine, co-written by Autry and Long.
Autry's singing had caught the attention of Republic Pictures, in Hollywood. Republic was having problems with its famous singing cowboy, Ken Maynard.
Autry (and Burnette) signed with Republic in 1934 and given bit parts in Maynards In Old Santa Fe in which Autry sang two songs.
Later that same year, Autry was given a supporting role in Maynard's 1934 film, Mystery Mountain — a 12 part serial.
The following year, 1935, Maynard was overlooked as Autry was given the starring role in The Phantom Empire — a 12-part science fiction flim in which he played a singing cowboy.
Autry's first starring role as a singing cowboy in a Hollywood western was in the 1935 film, Tumbling Tumbleweeds.
In 1937 Autry had a contract dispute with Republic and was replaced with Roy Rogers.
Autry soon returned to the fold and, from the late 1930s through the 1940s, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers were America's favourite singing cowboys.
With his successes in radio, recording, motion pictures, television and live theatre, Gene Autry is America's only entertainer to have five stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
