Welcome to The Online Roots of Rock™, a resource base that chronicles 350 years of music in America – from a Rock & Roll perspective.
The Online Roots of Rock™ can be approached on 3 levels:
The Roots Timeline
The Genre (or Style)
The Artist (or Personality)

THE ROOTS TIMELINE
The backbone of The Online Roots of Rock is the Roots Timeline – a graphic timeline representing the 3 streams of music in America:
white roots music
black roots music
mainstream "popular" music of middle America (that was imposed, to a large extent, from the top down by the commercial songwriters and publishers of Tin Pan Alley)
This is elaborated upon in the Introduction to the Roots Timeline.
In addition to offering this unique overview, the Roots Timeline will also provide button links to the music genres and styles.

THE GENRE (or STYLE)
A genre page provides a brief abstract of the genre, a listing of its most noteworthy artists, and links to relevant websites pertaining to the genre.
Also included on this page are recommended publications and recordings and, when available, other resources relevant to the genre.
Click on any artist listed on a genre page and you'll be taken to the page of that specific artist.
(The Classic Blues, Singing Cowboys, Doo Wop and Rockabilly buttons are active on the Roots Timeline)

THE ARTIST (or PERSONALITY)
The artist's page provides a brief abstract of the artist along with links to relevant websites pertaining to the artist.
Also included on this page are recommended publications and recordings and, when available, other resources relevant to the artist.

JIVE — OUR COMPANION PUBLICATION
The Online Roots of Rock has a companion publication — Jive.
Jive is a 48-page book that, like the website, explores the roots of Rock 'n' Roll — except Jive make a game of it!
Through twenty mini-crossword games with detailed and engaging clues and explanations, Jive traces the development of popular music in America to show, in a fun way, that the roots of Rock 'n' Roll are as fascinating as they are far-reaching.
Download the free 12-page Jive Sampler. (645 KB pdf)
